Archaeological Enigma: The Missing Jupiter Column in Mainz – The organization "Preserve Roman Mainz" plans to reinstall the antique column back to its historic location

In the heart of Mainz, Germany, a significant Roman monument named the Great Mainz Jupiter Column has been missing from its original location since May 2015. This column, an impressive testament to the Roman-German interaction and coexistence in ancient Mogontiacum, was erected in honour of Emperor Nero.

Decorated with 28 reliefs showcasing a mix of Celtic and Roman gods, the column stood tall for centuries, until it was discovered in 1905 at a depth of 2.5 meters in Sommerringstraße 6. Despite being shattered into 2,000 fragments, the original column was painstakingly reassembled and is now housed in the Mainz State Museum.

A nearly exact replica of the column stood in front of the Mainz State Parliament until its removal in May 2015 for restoration purposes due to its damaged state. However, the return of the original column to its original location remains uncertain.

The Great Mainz Jupiter Column is the largest and most impressive Jupiter column ever found north of the Alps, and its restoration and return involve archaeological and heritage authorities. Despite numerous inquiries, no specific details about delays or reasons for not fulfilling a 2023 restoration promise have been made public.

Recent developments suggest a renewed interest in the column's return. The association "Save the Roman Mainz" was founded two weeks ago with the goal of improving the visibility and preservation of Roman monuments in Mainz. The first goal of this association is the reinstallation of the Jupiter column at its original location.

The city of Mainz has been asked why the Great Mainz Jupiter Column is still not back and when it will return. There is also an initiative to turn the area at the Great Bleiche into a Roman park with a variety of monuments, including the Jupiter Column and the Dativius-Victor Arch.

The merchants and craftsmen's quarter on the site of today's Mainz New Town was strongly influenced by trade and the harbor facilities along the Rhine. This bustling activity may have supported the benefactors of the column, Quintus Julius Priscus and Quintus Julius Auctus, who may have belonged to the Celtic-Germanic mixed population in Mainz.

The story of the Great Mainz Jupiter Column is a testament to the rich history and cultural exchange that took place in ancient Mogontiacum. While its return to its original location remains uncertain, the ongoing efforts to restore and reinstall this significant monument reflect the city's commitment to preserving its Roman heritage.

The city's commitment to preserving its Roman heritage is evident in the formation of the association "Save the Roman Mainz," whose primary goal is to reinstall the Great Mainz Jupiter Column at its original home-and-garden setting, contributing to a lifestyle that promotes historical awareness and cultural appreciation. The recent initiative to transform the Great Bleiche area into a Roman park, featuring key monuments such as the Dativius-Victor Arch and the Jupiter Column, further underscores the city's desire to showcase its rich Roman-German past and foster an appreciation for home-and-garden and lifestyle elements drawn from antiquity.
