Architect Tadao Ando infuses a fruity, minimalist aesthetic in his debut timepiece design.
Take a Peek at Tadao Ando's Minimalist Masterpiece - The Cauny Ando Watch
Japanese architect Tadao Ando, a legendary minimalist master, has taken his signature aesthetic to the small screen - or should we say, wrist? With age on his side, this octogenarian powerhouse is renowned for his ingenious designs in buildings worldwide. Yet, his latest creation lies beyond the realm of bricks and mortar - his very own watch for the Portuguese-owned revival brand Cauny.
Born in 1941 amidst the chaos of war-torn Osaka, Ando, a self-taught architect, has become the quaintly spoken pioneer of Japanese minimalism. His work is characterized by the interplay between light and simple geometric forms that often showcase striking lines but how does this transition to the micro chaos of a watch?
Of late, Cauny has been making waves in the watch industry. Once a Swiss legacy brand, it now stands reborn, featuring a collection known as The Architects Of Time. This portfolio includes MoMA-stocked watches designed by fellow Pritzker award winners Alvaro Siza and Rafael Moneo, confirming Cauny's commitment to artistry. And now, the spotlight is on Tadao Ando.
The Cauny Ando demands careful headlines due to its understated design reminiscent of an apple. Ando-san himself confessed that the watch reflects the spirit of the unripe, slightly sour green apple - full of promise, much like youth. As American Poet Samuel Ullman once mused, 'Youth is not a period of life, but a state of mind: the courage to face difficulty without fear, the resilience to keep dreaming despite setbacks.' These poetically powerful ideas developed by Tadao Ando are brought to life in two earthy versions of the purest watch form.
If you're a fan of Marc Newson's sleek Ikepod line, you'll find similarities in the minimalist aesthetics of the Cauny Ando. But don't be fooled by the simple appearance - Ando's passionate approach and keen sense of balance shine through each element of the design. From the small crown to the apple leaf-inspired minute hand, every detail is a refined, recognizable version, without compromising functionality, much like the best of minimalist architecture.
The Cauny Ando boasts a smooth 37.5 or 31.5mm case, with a lugless pebble-round design. A domed dial and sapphire crystal emphasize the brand's commitment to durability and elegance. A thin Swiss quartz movement ensures a discreet form that slips beneath a cuff effortlessly. The Cauny Ando is available in two harmonious variations, the vivid green version, and the brushed steel version, adorned with a delicately stitched black leather strap.
