The Zubizuri Bridge: A Controversial Landmark in Bilbao
The Zubizuri, or 'white bridge', is an unmissable landmark in the heart of Bilbao, Spain. Suspended 10 metres above the Nervión estuary, this architectural masterpiece links Campo Volantin with the Paseo de Uribitarte promenade.
Conceived by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the Zubizuri offers a unique urban panorama where industrial heritage and modernity blend with elegance. It is just a few metres from the Guggenheim museum, another iconic attraction in Bilbao.
However, the Zubizuri has not been without controversy. Its original glass flooring, while visually striking, was criticised for favouring design over reliability. The glass was extremely slippery on rainy days, causing numerous falls and earning a somewhat feared reputation among locals.
Despite these issues, the Zubizuri continues to be a significant architectural masterpiece. In 1997, it was inaugurated and has since become a popular destination for strolls, offering breathtaking views of Bilbao's modernized facades and the imposing Guggenheim Museum.
Photographers and walkers frequently cross paths on the Zubizuri, often pausing to capture the city in a photo or to enjoy a moment of quiet contemplation. To make crossings safer, a new non-slip coating was installed.
The Zubizuri's design is particularly innovative and daring. Its titled arch and access ramps blend seamlessly into the urban landscape, while the bridge is supported by taut cables, giving it a dynamic, futuristic silhouette.
Santiago Calatrava's name is now internationally linked to iconic works such as the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia and the World Trade Center in New York. Despite the controversies surrounding the Zubizuri, it remains a testament to his visionary approach to architecture.
However, the debates surrounding the Zubizuri's high costs, structural problems, and expensive upkeep continue to shape its perception in Bilbao. These controversies, while ongoing, have not diminished the bridge's status as a symbol of the city's modern renaissance.
