Drinking, Dialogue, and Depictions: Constanze Klar's "End Times" Artwork on a North Sea Island
Artisan builds beach shack for "Endzeit discussions" - Artistic action-taker constructs a seashore tavern for "Discussions of the Apocalypse"
Taking a spin on the ordinary beach bar, Berlin-based artist, Constanze Klar (45), is cooking up something extraordinary on the coast of the island Spiekeroog. In an attempt to foster discussions among travelers and residents alike, Klar invites folks to stop by her makeshift bar for a chat and a drink as we edge closer to predicted "end times."
Appropriately named "The end of the f. world," this art project is the winning concept of Spiekeroog Tent Site Residency, an annual scholarhip for art projects that engage with social or ecological themes. During the residency, Klar sets up camp in the island's dunes, nearly three kilometers away from the village. The residency ends on July 4th.
To set the mood, Klar's bar is constructed out of repurposed cupboard walls and nestled on the beachfront. With a mix of beach vibes and end times vibes in the air, Klar aims to crack open conversations about the current state of society, all while sailing along the coast of this East Frisian island.
With the agreement of her guests, Klar records these heart-to-hearts. Post-project, she'll use these recorded conversations to create an animation featuring clay figures, which will be unveiled on the island in early July.
