Baltic Sea receives sandbags, owner struggles with repairs

In the picturesque coastal town of Thiessow on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen, a case of vandalism has left a local business owner, Stephan Lindner, facing an unexpected challenge.

On Monday, Lindner received an annoying call informing him that his beach chair, belonging to "Dünenvilla 1+2," was found in the water at beach access number 14. The beach chair, estimated to cost around 2,000 euros, was discovered tilted forward with the seating side in the water.

Upon learning of the incident, Lindner took to social media, appealing for help to put the beach chair back up on the dunes. A neighbor of the vacation home operator rallied two strong helpers to lift the heavy furniture back onto the beach.

Although the police regularly receive reports of such cases, identifying the perpetrators can be challenging. Vandalism against beach chairs is a common problem on the Baltic Sea islands, with Lindner's experience being just one of many similar incidents.

Lindner, who was not on site, will assess the extent of the damage once he returns from vacation and will take care of repairing or replacing the beach chair accordingly. If the vandalism happens again in the near future, he may file a complaint.

It is unclear how prevalent vandalism against rented beach chairs is on the Baltic Sea islands, as specific data is not readily available. However, general measures against vandalism of such property in beach resorts include surveillance cameras, staff patrols, securing chairs in designated areas, clear signage about rules and penalties, and possible involvement of local police.

In light of this incident, it is a reminder for both tourists and locals to respect the property of others and preserve the beauty of these popular tourist destinations.

In the pursuit of maintaining the beauty of Thiessow's beach resorts, it's essential to uphold a lifestyle that values outdoor-living and home-and-garden, including preserving rented beach furniture. The recent vandalism incident involving Stephan Lindner's beach chair serves as a stark reminder of this responsibility, encouraging everyone to be mindful of the impact of their actions on local businesses and the overall landscape.
