Bargain Your Dream Cycle: A Guide to Scoring Discounts on Your New Bicycle

Bicycle prices frequently receive reductions.

Burning a hole in your pocket for a new bike? Fear not, negotiation might just be your secret weapon! While some people might shy away from good old price haggling, others thrive in it. And it pays off, as shown by the ADAC's investigations. All you need is a bit of courage and the right tactics.

The ADAC, our trusted automobile club, took it upon themselves to test the price flexibility of 100 bicycle retailers across the country, and the results were quite promising. More often than not, they managed to secure discounts—sometimes right from the label price, without any negotiations at all!

Now, let's dive into the world of two-wheeled bargains: high-end E-Mountainbikes priced over 3500 euros and versatile city bikes around the 1000 euro mark. Whether it's your dream E-Mountainbike or a practical city bike, haggling might just snag you the best deal.

Does the Label Already Show the Discount?

First, check if the bicycle's price on the label is already below the Recommended Retail Price (RRP) without any negotiations. The ADAC's undercover operators found that 43 percent of retailers had already slashed the price, without any bargaining needed.

But don't stop there! Even if the price seems appealing, ask for more. The ADAC's team made two offers to lower the price, and 88 percent of the time, they were able to procure a price lower than the RRP.

Oh, the Sweet Taste of Success!

63 percent of retailers gave some ground during the first negotiation, and 46 percent capitulated one more time towards the end of the discussion. On average, they scored a 13 percent discount on the E-Mountainbikes and 15 percent on city bikes. The discount didn't always take the form of reduced prices; it could also come in the form of free accessories, such as a lock, and free services.

City or Countryside? Prices Can Vary!

Interesting finding: Prices were, on average, lower in cities compared to the countryside. Every second bicycle in the city was priced lower than the RRP, while it was only every third model in rural areas. So, if you're eyeing a new bicycle, be sure to explore multiple retailers, as prices can differ significantly.
