Bidirectional Charging Mandatory: EV Infrastructure Booms

The world of electric vehicle (EV) charging is evolving rapidly. The ISO 15118-20 communication standard for bidirectional charging is set to become mandatory, while the first bidirectional AC business models are emerging. Meanwhile, the market for wallboxes and charging stations is booming, with 42 companies and 204 products listed in the pv magazine market overview, including 60 new products.

The focus is shifting towards setting up charging infrastructure that can meet future technical and economic requirements. Discussions are ongoing about energy management systems, comparing wallbox-integrated, standalone, and DIY systems. Modern wallboxes are becoming central components in intelligently networked homes, offering controllability and flexibility. They can decide when and from which source to charge an EV, using excess energy from photovoltaic systems, stored power from batteries, or grid power based on dynamic tariffs.

Some manufacturers are targeting installers without programming knowledge, making do-it-yourself energy management systems more accessible. In the September 2025 issue of pv Zeitschrift, manufacturers like Mennekes, ABL, and KEBA showcased their innovative solutions. Mennekes focused on robust, user-friendly charging solutions, ABL emphasized smart grid integration, and KEBA specialized in scalable wallbox systems. The same issue of pv magazine also discussed trends and heavy-duty vehicle charging infrastructure.

As bidirectional charging becomes mandatory and AC business models progress, the EV charging landscape is poised for significant growth and innovation. With a wide range of wallbox options now available, the focus is on intelligently networked homes and flexible charging solutions that can adapt to future needs.
