Blossoming Legend: Hildesheim's Famed Rose Bush in Full Swing
Bronnen Arkansas, the famous blossom of Hildesheim, is back and shining brightly once more. This flower adorns the cathedral in all its delicate, saturated pink. The one-thousand-year-old rosebush embellishing the apse of the cathedral has sprung forth again.
Legends surrounding this rose reach as far back as the founding of the bishopric around 815. Names like Charlemagne's son are linked to stories of an impossible mission. On a rest stop, he unsuccessfully attempted to retrieve a relic vessel trapped by a wild hedge rose. Because of this, he was said to have built a chapel on that exact site, which eventually became the cathedral.
Destroyed by fire just eight weeks after the Hildesheim Cathedral suffered total destruction in March 1945, the rosebush too burned and perished. However, from its nearby buried roots, 25 new shoots miraculously sprouted amidst the rubble. A central entrance, the cathedral foyer, allows visitors to glimpse this remarkable spectacle.
