Here Comes Bookfest 2023, With French Flavor

Are you a bookworm living in Bucharest? Then mark your calendars for the upcoming Bookfest! This year, the event spotlights Portugal as its guest country.

Kickstarting off on May 30, the French author Éric Reinhardt will dominate the highlights. Whether you're a fan of his power-examining novels like L'Amour et les Forêts (Prix Renaudot des lycées, 2014) and Comédies françaises (Prix Les Inrockuptibles, 2020) or curious about his analytical approach to femininity and identity metamorphosis, this is your opportunity to immerse yourself in a riveting conversation with the author and journalist Ioana Maria Stăncescu. Don't worry; the discourse will be in French, but you'll be in good company, as the professor Lidia Cotea from the University of Bucharest's French Language and Literature Department will join them in the discussion.

Beyond Éric Reinhardt, Olivier Roche, a well-known researcher and editor, has also landed in Bucharest for the event. Roche is famous for his studies on Hergé's work and the Tintin universe, and promises to open a fascinating field of reflection that transcends comic book boundaries.

Music to the ears of comic book enthusiasts, Dodo Niță, a Romanian comics historian, will be present, as will Daniel Horia, the Franco-Romanian artist who crafted the autobiographical graphic novel, Je suis né roumain.

Looking for thought-provoking literature on belonging, memory, and female identity? Check out Sophie Képès with her literary essay, Désappartenir, which delves into the complexities of identity, inner exile, and "non-belonging" as an existential choice. And if you're intrigued by the Franco-Romanian actress who influenced theater and avant-garde imagination, Laurence Meiffret's biography of Génica Athanasiou, L'anti-muse d'Antonin Artaud, is a must-read.

Stay tuned for details on Romania and the Republic of Moldova's proposal for the Goncourt Prize, which will be announced on May 29. As part of the international Choix Goncourt network, it reflects the literary preferences of the new generation of French-speaking readers.

Lastly, didn't we mention the cultural season French Spring Together? Held between March and June 2025, it marks the Centenary of the French Institute in Romania, celebrating the century of cultural, scientific, and educational collaboration between France and Romania. So, gear up for a literary expedition like no other! 📚📖️
