The Ashley Furniture Store in Kempten-Hirschdorf, a beloved institution in the Allgäu region, has announced its closure by the end of the year. The family-owned business, known for its long tradition and being more than just a furniture store, will not reach the 70-year milestone.
The news of the closure has deeply affected the residents of the Allgäu region. Rüdiger Mayer, the long-standing CEO of the company, has confirmed the closure as "the hardest decision of his life."
The closure is due to general purchasing restraint and intensifying price competition. In 2023, Mayer formally handed over the management to Daniela Rothländer, an experienced manager who previously worked at Boconcept in Cologne. Rothländer has set important impulses for modernization and always acted in the best interests of the employees and customers during her tenure.
Rothländer initiated the clearance sale independently and in an orderly manner. Everything in the store is dramatically discounted, including upholstered furniture, built-in kitchens, living walls, bedrooms, dining groups, coffee tables, mattresses, box spring beds, sideboards/vitrines, and genuine oriental rugs. The inventory, worth millions, must be sold off within the shortest possible time.
The Ashley Furniture Store operated on over 8,000 square meters of exhibition space. In 2023, the leadership of Ashley Möbelgeschäft in Kempten-Hirschdorf was taken over by Sebastian Mayer, and Rothländer took over the management. The Allgäuer Zeitung, among others, has confirmed the closure.
