Abstract

Case Series of Three Patients Undergoing Splenic Artery Aneurysm Embolization with Coils and n-Butyl 2-Cyanoacrylate (NBCA), Utilizing a Novel Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-Coated Microcatheter

Background: Splenic artery aneurysms (SAA) pose a significant risk due to potential rupture. N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA) embolization is a common minimally invasive treatment, yet catheter performance can impact procedural success. This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of the PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter in delivering NBCA during embolization of SAA.

Methods: A retrospective case series of patients undergoing NBCA embolization for SAA using the PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter. Procedural details, embolization success, complications, and follow-up outcomes were analyzed.

Results: The study includes three female patients: a 55-year-old, a 60-year-old, and an 80-year-old. Each patient presented with an SAA that was either incidentally discovered or demonstrated significant growth over time. The embolization procedure was successful, with complete occlusion of the aneurysm confirmed postembolization. Minimal complications such as mild splenic infarction or transient inflammatory responses were observed.

Conclusion: The PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter demonstrated high technical success and safety in NBCA-assisted embolization of SAA, suggesting it is a reliable tool for complex vascular interventions involving liquid embolics.

  • Treatment options focusing on endovascular embolization.
  • Challenges with NBCA embolization, including catheter adherence and delivery precision.
  • Rationale for using the PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter (low friction, durability, compatibility with NBCA).

Methods

  • Patient selection criteria.
  • Description of the PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter features.
  • Embolization technique with NBCA (concentration, volumes, dilution with Lipiodol).
  • Data collection on procedural time, catheter performance, complications.
  • Follow-up imaging protocol.

Results

  • Patient demographics and aneurysm characteristics.
  • Technical success rate (successful catheterization, embolization without NBCA reflux or catheter entrapment).
  • Clinical outcomes (symptom resolution, aneurysm exclusion).
  • Complications (e.g., non-target embolization, rupture).
  • Follow-up results (aneurysm size reduction, no recanalization).

Discussion

  • Comparison with other microcatheters or embolization techniques.
  • Benefits of PTFE coating: reduced NBCA adhesion, easier catheter withdrawal.
  • Limitations of the study (small case series, retrospective nature).
  • Recommendations for future studies.

Conclusion

  • The PTFE-coated Carry Leon NSX microcatheter is effective and safe for NBCA-assisted embolization of SAA.
  • It potentially improves procedural safety and outcomes.
