Celebrating 150 Years of Tales and Liquor at Kolkata's Chhota Bristol Bar

In the heart of Kolkata, nestled within the Metro Gully near the Esplanade crossing, lies a historic watering hole that has stood the test of time - Chhota Bristol. Over 150 years old, this bar is renowned for its deep-rooted heritage and unique, convivial atmosphere.

Formally known as Shaw Bros (Wine) Pvt Ltd, the bar is managed by the Shaw family, who have maintained its family-oriented style. The name "Chhota Bristol" (meaning "Little Bristol") is believed to have originated from its location behind the famed Bristol Hotel. Journalists from nearby publishing houses, who were regular patrons, popularized this moniker, and it has stuck ever since, despite the original patrons moving on.

Upon entering Chhota Bristol, the first thing that hits you is the noise - a testament to the lively atmosphere within. The bar remains open till 10pm on regular days, but it is best to avoid the bar between 5.30pm and 7pm due to the regular crowd. It remains closed between 6pm and 6.15pm when a daily puja is held.

The atmosphere at Chhota Bristol is distinctive for its bonhomie - a warm and friendly relationship between patrons and staff. Here, staff playfully but firmly regulate customers’ drinking, reflecting a culture of camaraderie and mutual respect rather than rowdiness. This environment highlights not only the bar’s longstanding tradition but also its role as a people's bar in Kolkata where stories, spirits, and community interweave.

Despite its age, Chhota Bristol does not have a kitchen and does not plan to have one in the near future. However, some of the employees have set up a canteen and sell snacks themselves. The food is good, but nothing extraordinary, and it costs around Rs 200 to Rs 250 per head. In the pre-Covid days, local street food vendors used to sell food items inside the Chhota Bristol.

At Chhota Bristol, you are not expecting any fancy cocktails, and it is expected that you know your drinks. The menu is not carried by waiters, instead, it is printed on a glow sign on the wall and an LED screen displays the liquor prices. The bar remains one of the last frontiers for the fraternity, as women are not allowed there (a matter of debate).

Chhota Bristol's history dates back 150 years, rooted in Kolkata’s colonial past. It continues to maintain its unique, convivial atmosphere created by its historic patrons like journalists and the familial management style, making it a beloved Kolkata institution.

Engage in the vibrant, historic atmosphere at Chhota Bristol, a watering hole known for its blend of food-and-drink, entertainment, sports, home-and-garden, and lifestyle discussions, reflecting the heritage of Kolkata's colonial past. The bar, distinguished by its bonhomie, hosts a canteen where you can enjoy affordable snacks, while the limited menu caters to those knowledgeable about their drinks.
