In the vibrant mixed-use area of Freiburg, a unique attraction has emerged - a surf wave pool, offering a slice of paradise for locals and visitors alike. The pool, which cost approximately 400,000 euros to build, is now operational and located opposite the exhibition center.

The brainchild of Mario Gerlach, who conceived the idea in 2016, the surf wave pool took nine years and two million euros to come to fruition. Despite an initial rejection of the building application, former competitive swimmer Achim Gall, who built the pool, managed to secure approval by proposing the addition of courses, admission, and rentals to cover the annual operating costs of around 16,000 euros.

Erna Weil, a neighbor, expresses her satisfaction with the surf wave, stating, "We feel like we're in paradise here." She praises the idea of building a surf wave not just for oneself, but for everyone, as "simply brilliant." So far, no neighbor has complained about the surf wave in Freiburg.

The pool, equipped with a turnstile, changing rooms, showers, and WC, is used for swimming lessons as well as leisure activities. Gall, the pool's owner, states that seeing happy faces is more important to him than making money.

In comparison to private swimming pools in Germany, the cost of building a surf wave pool like the one in Freiburg can vary significantly. While the exact cost for this specific pool is not available, it's worth noting that the cost of installing a private swimming pool can range from approximately €30,000 to €100,000 or more, depending on the pool's size and features.

Germany is home to many public swimming pools, some of which offer unique experiences like wave pools and giant slides. For instance, Rhein·strand·bad in Karlsruhe and the thermal bath in Erding are renowned for their extensive amenities. However, the most exclusive public swimming pool in Germany, which shuns crowded fast food areas, is located in Uhingen, Göppingen district.

Meanwhile, similar surf wave pools can be found in Munich and Berlin, making Freiburg's surf wave a welcome addition to the city's offerings. Whether you're a surfer, swimmer, or simply looking for a new leisure activity, the surf wave in Freiburg offers a refreshing and exciting experience in the heart of the city.

The surf wave pool in Freiburg, a remarkable addition to the city, isn't limited to Water sports enthusiasts; it constitutes a unique home-and-garden attraction for residents, providing a tranquil lifestyle escape amidst the bustling city. While constructing home-and-garden amenities like swimming pools can be financially demanding, as evident in the cost of a private pool ranging from €30,000 to €100,000, the surf wave pool in Freiburg, though costing more at approximately 2 million euros, fulfills a collective need for relaxation and enjoyment.
