Class B Driver's License: How to Expand Your Rights Without Taking a Test - Class B License Holders Can Now Tow Heavier Trailers With B96 Extension
Drivers with a Class B license can now tow heavier trailers with the new B96 extension. The extension, valid across Europe, allows towing trailers over 750 kg, with a total vehicle and trailer weight not exceeding 4.25 tons. This is ideal for larger caravans or trailers that exceed the normal Class B limit but do not surpass 4250 kg combined.
Obtaining the B96 extension does not require a speed test, only a theoretical and practical part in a driving school, costing between 300 to 500 euros. In contrast, the next step, the BE class, requires a practical test and at least five driving lessons, with estimated costs around 1,000 euros. With a BE class, you can tow trailers up to 3,500 kg, with a combined weight of seven tons for the trailer and towing vehicle.
A Class B license allows driving any passenger car without restrictions on horsepower or speed, but with a weight limit of 3,500 kg for the vehicle and trailer combination. This includes vehicles carrying up to eight passengers, light motorcycles up to 45 km/h, three-wheeled vehicles, four-wheeled light vehicles, tractors up to 40 km/h, and large hay balers up to 25 km/h.
The B96 extension provides a cost-effective and convenient way for Class B license holders to tow heavier trailers, expanding their towing capabilities without the need for a practical test. However, for those requiring even greater towing capacity, the BE class offers higher limits at a higher cost and with a practical test requirement.
