Dance in Grafental: A Community-Building Event Organised by the Greens
In a unique display of urban transformation, the Greens party organised a dance lesson for modern partner dance in the typically quiet area of Grafental, Düsseldorf, on Thursday, 10th July. The event, led by Maria Dortmann, a discofox instructor at TD TSC Düsseldorf Rot-Weiß, took place on a concrete square that was usually vacant.
Barbara Weißhaupt, the local spokesperson of the Greens, emphasised the importance of public spaces for social interaction and idea exchange. The dance lesson was attended by district mayor Philipp Schlee, who showed his support for the event's aim to demonstrate the potential of urban spaces for community building and promoting democracy.
The music for the dance lesson was played from phones to a Bluetooth box, creating a lively atmosphere in the heart of Grafental. Participants were introduced to spins and turns of modern partner dance, with Maria Dortmann often encouraging them to perform moves "in the original tempo."
The Greens also highlighted the need for de-sealing various places in Düsseldorf to allow rainwater to seep in and encourage plant growth for shade and coolness. Although this was not the focus of the event, it underscored the party's commitment to sustainable urban development.
This unconventional event by the Greens is reminiscent of the "Public Moves – Bewegung im Grünen" event held in Hofgarten in September 2025, which transformed a concrete urban area into a vibrant venue for contemporary dance, promoting community building and reclaiming public green spaces for cultural interaction [1].
While other dance events occur in Düsseldorf, such as the Free Spirit Festival and the Red Bull Dance Your Style qualifier, the Greens' dance event on Thursday specifically emphasised using public green urban spaces to bridge community and urban culture.
On the same evening, a separate event, "Breathless through the night" with Helene Fischer, took place on Hohenzollernstraße. Despite the competition, the Greens' dance event managed to draw a crowd and spark conversations about the potential of urban spaces for community engagement and democratic expression.
