"Cultured Park's Overgrowth Transforms into New Life: Beach, Art-Huts, and Insect Hotel"
In the heart of Yekaterinburg, a rundown alleyway called Basovyiya Pereulok might just become a local sensation, if they held a competition for the most neglected urban area. With wild overgrowth, a neglected riverbank, and an eerie feeling of civilization just out of arm's reach, it's like you're on a deserted plot.
But now, this forgotten spot stands a chance. Over ten hectares will transform into the "Park of Culture," an ambitious project combining residential development, an urban park, and a revitalized riverfront into one vibrant, open space. With a beach, bike trails, and art installations, this forsaken bank will spring to life.
This project is backed by city officials, so it's not just a private endeavor—it's an official city endeavor. This means the park and riverfront will serve not only residents, but also anyone who loves to stroll, relax, and spend time by the water. And the real kicker? This place is far from boring.
In fact, this project has some surprises up its sleeve:
First off, there's a giant balloon dog sculpture—the kind you see clowns create at parties, but this one will be as tall as a tree. In the spirit of Jeff Koons, it'll bring a smile to everyone who stumbles upon it.
Second, they're restoring the ecosystem. Architects and landscape architects, inspired by projects from London, Spain, and Finland, plan to preserve and integrate the living environment. The main challenge is to develop a self-sustaining ecosystem. To achieve this, they'll launch a phytoremediation program: special plants will clean the air, water, and soil.
They'll also create shallow platforms along the riverbank with dwarf irises, reeds, sedge, and cattails. These will collect rainwater and self-purify it through moisture-loving plants and gravel.
The river itself will be cleaned up, and to support biodiversity, they'll set up "hotels" for pollinating insects. These have been used in Europe for a while now, and ours will be just as effective. Insects will help with pollination, keep harmful insects like mosquitoes and ticks at bay, and strengthen the soil.
Finally, the park and waterfront—not just a residential complex. At 3.5 hectares, these spaces will offer a variety of scenarios: a morning coffee by the river, a sunset by the water, a walk with your dog, yoga in the grass, fishing from a pier, and more.
The waterfront will be a two-level design: a wooden walkway by the water with a pier and relaxation zones, and an upper boulevard with bike paths and flower beds. The beach, amphitheater, swings, hammocks, a duck-shaped skatepark, motorcycle park, barefoot path—it all might seem excessive, but it's this abundance that will make the space lively and diverse.
A pedestrian path along the river will connect the new park with the Mayakovsky Park. The existing bridge, offering another route to residential areas, will be refurbished: along it, an avenue of trees will create a green pedestrian bridge—a first in Russia.
But even with all these plans, they'll keep the existing trees and replant any dying or rotting ones.
And yes, there will also be homes built. On 6.5 hectares, there will be five multi-story buildings. The facades will be adorned with bright inserts with smooth transitions in color—like a construction set, but without the bold colors. At night, the buildings will be illuminated, creating architectural accents on the urban landscape.
Each section will have entrances from the street and courtyard—convenient for strollers, bikes, and anything that doesn't like steps. On the ground floor, there will be bathrooms, wheelchair-accessible restrooms, and storage for seasonal items, sports equipment, and other seldom-used items.
The halls, as well as most of the public spaces in the "Park of Culture," will be dedicated to art. The first building will be an "artist's studio," and the lobbies will resemble an artist's workshop: industrial lights, artworks, designer mailboxes, and plush chairs.
The apartments will be unique. You can choose a studio, a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom, or a three-bedroom—each with a spacious kitchen-diner, a master suite, a walk-in wardrobe, and terraces.

For décor, they'll offer two options—clean or completely clean. The former includes wallpaper on the walls and built-in cabinetry, while the latter includes everything from wallpaper to built-in cabinetry, sinks, and appliances in the bathrooms.
In short, even the "quadras" in this place will have character—although if we're being honest, a beach, a duck-shaped skatepark, and hotels for bugs are almost like bonuses.
- This revitalized urban area, known as the "Park of Culture," will offer a diverse range of activities, including a morning coffee by the river, yoga in the grass, fishing from a pier, and a variety of art installations such as a giant balloon dog sculpture.
- The project also focuses on the restoration of the ecosystem, aiming to create a self-sustaining living environment by introducing special plants for phytoremediation, shallow platforms with moisture-loving plants to collect and purify rainwater, and "hotels" for pollinating insects to support biodiversity.
- In addition to residential development, the park and waterfront will provide spaces for leisure activities, such as a sunset by the water, a walk with your dog, a pedestrian path connecting to other parks, and unique features like a duck-shaped skatepark, motorcycle park, and barefoot path.
