Friedrichstraße, a bustling street in Berlin-Mitte, is set to reopen to car traffic on November 22, following extensive public discussions. However, the ultimate goal remains to transform the street into a pedestrian zone.

The reopening is of temporary duration, as confirmed by Almut Neumann, the district official. The owner of the street, the state or city administration of Berlin, has announced this temporary change. In central Berlin, streets are typically public property managed by the city authorities.

The traffic administration, led by Bettina Jarasch, has applied for the permanent redesignation of Friedrichstraße between Französische and Leipziger Straße. However, the procedure is not yet completed. The temporary reopening comes after a ruling by the Berlin Administrative Court, which declared the closure of the section of Friedrichstraße after the expiration of a traffic trial to be unlawful.

In the meantime, bicycle traffic will be routed through Charlottenstraße, making space for a car-free pedestrian zone on Friedrichstraße. The district office of Mitte has also announced the removal of traffic safety measures on Friedrichstraße between Französische Straße and Leipziger Straße for late Tuesday evening.

No information was provided in the article about the status of the Oderberger Straße project, Berlin's pop-up bike lanes, or the 2.5 kilometer bike lane in Neukölln. The goal to transform Friedrichstraße into a pedestrian zone is expected to be announced by the end of the year in the district newspaper.

As the transformation of Friedrichstraße continues, the city authorities are working to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment in a bid to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
