Derelict Bucharest cinema kick-starts transformation through video mapping spectacle

In the heart of Buzești-Berzei, at the intersection of Calea Griviței and Atelierului Street, lies a historic building - the former Cinema Marconi. Originally opened in 1930, the cinema has seen its fair share of history, but in recent years, it has fallen into disrepair. However, a new chapter is about to begin for this iconic building.

The private owner of Cinema Marconi, in partnership with the non-profit organisation Arcen, plans to breathe new life into the cinema. The vision is to transform it into a multifunctional cultural venue, complete with cinema halls, concert and conference halls, exhibition spaces, a hub for emerging artists, an open-air terrace for film screenings, a café, and a restaurant.

The first phase of securing the building is scheduled to begin this summer, with the entire complex expected to be completed and operational by 2029 or 2030. This ambitious project aims to mobilize the local community and heritage preservation expertise rather than rely solely on state or private funds.

Arcen president and founder, Edmond Niculușcă, acknowledged the challenges in transforming Cinema Marconi, stating that the process would be a long road. However, he expressed his optimism, emphasising the potential for the venue to become a cultural hub for Bucharest.

Cinema Marconi's rich history is not forgotten in this transformation. The cinema was renamed Cinema Dacia in the 1960s, and today, it stands as a listed historical monument. The project aims to preserve and celebrate this history while creating a modern, vibrant space for the community.

For a glimpse of what's to come, mark your calendars for Friday, July 25. A video mapping show is scheduled at Cinema Marconi in Bucharest, offering a sneak peek into the exciting future of this iconic building.

The transformation of Cinema Marconi promises to encompass various aspects of community life, with plans for a multifunctional cultural venue that includes home-and-garden spaces, such as a café and restaurant, alongside educational and self-development areas, like exhibition spaces for emerging artists. Sustainable-living values are also integrated into the project's vision, as the venue aims to be a beacon for local heritage preservation and mobilization, moving away from reliance on state or private funds.
