Courtyard Refurbishment at Dresden Zwinger Nearly Finished - Dresden Zwinger's Inner Courtyard Remodeling Prior to Completion's End

Get ready to rediscover the magic as the heart of Dresden's tourism scene, the Zwinger courtyard, gears up for a comeback! The final stretches of renovation are underway, aiming for a grand unveiling later this summer. The word on the street is that it's right around the corner, perhaps as early as the steamy days of summer!

Two out of four fountains have been rejuvenated, the media trench completed, and a new ramp crafted to enhance the courtyard experience. The western half, including the lawn mirror and pathway surfaces, has been restored, with the majority of it already opened to the public. Overall, nearly half of the western courtyard is accessible, the spokesperson for the Saxon State Property and Building Management (SIB) shared. The Crown Gate, though, is still bustling with workers, installing manhole covers and replacing temporary surfaces with sandstone. Landscaping works are currently underway in the eastern half of the courtyard. The total construction costs are pegged at approximately 15.4 million euros.

A Baroque Grandeur

The Dresden Zwinger is the city's premier Baroque structure and a symbol of its grandeur. Built between 1709 and 1728 under the commission of Elector Augustus the Strong, it consists of six pavilions, several arches, and a long gallery surrounding the symmetrical courtyard. This architectural marvel, overseen by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Balthasar Permoser, served as a venue for princely representation, courtly festivities, and the storage of the ruler's collections.

A Cultural Investment

Each year, the region investments an average of 1.5 million euros in preserving this cultural treasure. The focus is mainly on new elevators and improved fire protection in the Glockenspiel Pavilion. Remnants of the previously only suspected Baroque garden and traces of medieval buildings discovered during excavations are once again hidden beneath the earth. These include riding schools, the old Zwinger grotto, and gardens. Since 1991 to 2024, around 222 million euros have been poured into the renovation and maintenance of the ensemble.

As we eagerly await the completion of the renovation, the top floor area remains accessible to visitors, offering breathtaking views of the courtyard. The outdoor area of the Zwinger is still open to the public with no admission fee. Let's cross our fingers for a spectacular summer reveal!
