Duisburg's Swimming Initiative Celebrates Success, Teaches Vital Skills
Duisburg's swimming initiative 'Duisburg learns to swim' celebrated its success today. Mayor Sören Link and project participants presented prizes to ten talented young artists at the Rhein-Ruhr-Bath. The event highlighted the importance of swimming as a crucial life skill.
The project, supported annually with €100,000 by the Sparkasse Duisburg's sports foundation, has reached a significant number of children. Marcel Groß, the foundation's managing director, praised the creativity and quantity of entries in the painting competition. Over 140 children, aged twelve and under, participated, with ten winners receiving prizes.
The winners' creative artwork depicts the ten essential swimming pool rules for children. These colourful illustrations will now adorn the walls of all Duisburger baths, serving as a fun and engaging reminder of pool safety. The main prize, the 'Golden Swimming Pool Ticket', was awarded by the Sparkasse Duisburg.
The project's impact is evident in the numbers. Christoph Gerth-Butry, deputy chairman of the Stadtsportbund, reported that over 500 children aimed for the seahorse badge in the first course series, with another 500 starting in the second series. Marc Rüdesheim, Deputy Manager of DuisburgSport, highlighted the project's reach, offering free swimming lessons to around 20 percent of a graduating class.
The 'Duisburg learns to swim' project continues to grow and make a positive impact. With the support of the Sparkasse Duisburg and the dedication of local officials, the initiative is teaching children vital swimming skills and promoting pool safety through creative and engaging activities.
