Düsseldorf honors Buda Day: from "Wäsche 161" to the pirate beach rave in Oberbilk.
A cultural revival is brewing at Werstener Dorfstraße 161, a currently empty address in Düsseldorf. Despite lacking electricity and being slated for demolition, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon: "Wäschte 161" plans to transform into a cultural hub in the near future.
Bügend Day 2023 marked the first steps towards this transformation, with Dirk Rauchmann and his team of "Büdchen rescuers" participating. The event offered a collection of activities, ranging from photobooths and literary readings to folk and blues performances, and even a Basketball Beer Can Challenge.
Tom de Toys provided lyrical readings, while Annabelle & Joy captivated attendees with their unplugged folk and blues set, even without electricity. Their performance was part of the festivities that took place on a large, less-than-perfect field, filled with stubborn potholes and exotic gi soap bubbles that floated skyward for the children.
The curious crowd that gathered on that day, numbering around fifty to sixty people, included local resident Wolfgang Hummel, who previously leased the property from 2006 to 2008. Hummel shared memories of the bustling booth that provided workers in the area with fresh, homemade sandwiches and groceries.
Hummel expressed his pleasure at seeing the booth's revival, expressing that its closure would have been a waste. During his tenure, he didn’t make money from cigarettes and newspapers, but from the sandwiches and groceries that people could pick up on their daily commute.
Around 35 booths throughout ten Düsseldorf districts joined in the decentralized actions for the Bügend Day 2023, offering a mix of art, music, food, culture, children's activities, or flea markets. The day was a testament to the lively and creative spirit of Düsseldorf, according to Clemens Henle, board member of Düsseldorf Büdchen Day e.V.
