Embroidered Avian Artistry: Deborah Campbell's Coastal Bird Creations
Deborah Campbell, a renowned textile mixed media artist based in Kilmacolm, Scotland, is offering an online workshop titled 'Coastal Layers - Bird Embroidery'. This workshop, consisting of 9 videos and 9 worksheets, totalling 3.45 hours, provides participants with the opportunity to learn the art of embroidering coastal birds onto fabric textures.
The workshop is designed to be a stand-alone experience, but participants can enhance their journey by also taking the 'Coastal Layers workshop' to create their own printed fabrics for the background. Deborah Campbell, the tutor for this course, has chosen the Oystercatcher as her coastal bird to demonstrate the process.
Participants will begin by learning to use their sewing machine as a drawing tool, a technique that Deborah often employs in her work. They will then progress to basic embroidery stitches such as satin, split, stem, and French knots, possibly long and short stitch for shading feathers. Layering techniques will be taught to build texture and dimension, replicating feathers and other bird features.
Color blending will be a key aspect of the workshop, as participants will learn to blend different colored stitches to achieve shading and form. Participants will also consider color and visual balance within their textile.
Throughout the workshop, Deborah will share her process for applying a coastal bird to a patterned background. She works onto many different fabric textures including organza and gauze, and participants will learn to use sheers to create shape, form, and tonal differences.
Participants will add final embellishment and detail with hand embroidery. The workshop provides instant and lifetime access, and participants will have the opportunity to join Deborah's Facebook Group for sharing work and getting feedback.
Deborah Campbell trained in Printed Textiles at Glasgow School of Art and her textile artwork is inspired by Scotland's Coastal Landscape and Birdlife. The Oystercatcher image used by Deborah was obtained from an online image library www.wildlifereferencephotos.com.
It's worth noting that Deborah often uses quite simple methods of printing that don't require a lot of equipment. The cost of the workshop is approximately £80 ($109*). For the most accurate and detailed information, including specific steps and materials, it is best to consult Deborah Campbell’s official workshop page, materials pack, or video content directly associated with her bird embroidery online course. Participants should have some experience with free motion embroidery, and beginners are suggested to start with the 'Coastal Layers workshop'.
