Emerging Transportation Methods Emerge in the Wake of Expo Legacy

The Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park, located in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture, has undergone a significant transformation and now presents a new face as Ghibli Park, which opened in November 2022. This transformation is a testament to the vision of Honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda, who was also the Chairman of the Expo Association for the Aichi Expo.

Shoichiro Toyoda's legacy at the Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park centers on pioneering new forms of mobility rooted in innovation and sustainability. This legacy is actively carried forward through ongoing developments at the park, such as advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles and interactive demonstrations aimed at refining and supporting new mobility systems.

One such development is the e-Palette, a futuristic transportation experience that drove through the park from January to February this year, carrying park visitors. Another new mobility option in the park is modeled after the iconic cat bus from the film My Neighbor Totoro. APM (Accessible People Mover) Cat Buses will start operating on March 16.

Ghibli Park, inspired by the films of Studio Ghibli, complements these ideals by creating an immersive environment that blends creativity, technology, and environmental harmony. Although its primary focus is cultural and experiential, the park embodies a philosophy consistent with Shoichiro Toyoda’s emphasis on sustainable and innovative mobility by fostering imaginative, nature-integrated experiences that celebrate harmonious coexistence—a core message in both Ghibli’s storytelling and Toyota’s approach to future mobility.

Director Goro Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli is the guide for the park, ensuring that the spirit of fun and attitude towards nature, as seen in his video, are preserved. Goro Miyazaki emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural environment in the park.

It is important to note that the Honorary Chairman's father, Kiichiro, is not related to the development of new mobility options in the park. A separate ceremony was held in Toyota City to honour the lifetime achievements of Honorary Chairman Shoichiro's father, Kiichiro. Akio, the representative of the Toyoda family, attended the ceremony and spoke to the children who will take on the future.

In conclusion, the legacies and innovations initiated by Shoichiro Toyoda at Expo 2005 are manifested not only in cutting-edge technological developments at the commemorative park but also symbolically through spaces like Ghibli Park that promote values of sustainability, innovation, and human-centered design in mobility and environment. The transformation of the Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park into Ghibli Park serves as a testament to Shoichiro Toyoda's vision for future transportation and a harmonious coexistence with nature.
