Osheaga Festival Highlights: Jorja Smith, Doechii, and The Killers Light Up Montreal

The Osheaga Music and Arts Festival, held at Jean-Drapeau Park in Montreal, kicked off its three-day run on Friday with a series of captivating performances.

Jorja Smith, the British singer-songwriter, captivated the crowd with her performance on the River stage. Deep basses chopped by breakbeats filled the air, encouraging spectators to dance as Smith delivered a set that spanned soul music, dancehall, and UK garage sounds. Despite her voice being somewhat challenged by the large outdoor setting, Smith's stage experience and accompanying musicians compensated, making for a memorable performance.

On the Forest stage, Doechii, a young rapper, headlined and attracted one of the largest crowds of the festival so far. The concert decor, featuring ferns, aquatic plants, and an image of a forest, created a serene backdrop that complemented Doechii's unique style. Unfortunately, security had to attend to fans affected by heatstroke during her set.

The Killers took to the River stage at 9 pm, opening with their iconic song Mr. Brightside from their debut album Hot Fuss (2004). The band, led by Brandon Flowers, delivered a high-energy performance that did not include any songs from their latest album Pressure Machine, which was released in August 2021.

Elsewhere at the festival, Finneas and Lucy Dacus reminded the audience to stay hydrated due to the heat. The musical incarnation of Michel Tremblay's play, "Les Belles-Sœurs symphonique", proved to be little inspired.

The festival continues on Saturday with Tyler, the Creator as the headliner, and on Sunday with Olivia Rodrigo and Jamie XX to close the festival. Our "Devoir" photographers are bearing witness to the Montreal music festival, capturing the energy and excitement of the event.

In sad news, Isabelle Vaillancourt, the general director of Publications BLD, which publishes "Les Débrouillards" among others, passed away on Sunday. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Osheaga Music and Arts Festival as the weekend progresses.
