Expense turns out to be the price of Abi-action
In the small town of Rottenburg, Germany, the senior class of Eugen-Bolz-Gymnasium found themselves in hot water after vandalizing their school with spray paint on July 9th. The graffiti incident, initially met with shock by the principal, Andreas Greis, and the school management, has since become a "Renovierungsprojekt" (renovation project), requiring costly repairs.
The students, showing a sense of responsibility, have been working together to remove the graffiti. Professional help is being provided by a painter and his employee. The removal process involves using tape, brushes, and paint rollers, and the city donated five buckets of paint for the task. The students are responsible for covering the cost of the removal process, with the remaining amount being covered from the class fund and donations collected at the prom, according to student representative, Heege.
The GoFundMe campaign for the graffiti removal, started by Heege, has since been closed. By Monday, 4,785 euros had been collected through the campaign. The initial cost estimate for the removal was 9,000 euros, but it has been reduced to 7,000 euros.
Despite the setback, Heege believes that the class's bond has become stronger due to the situation. Principal Greis, who initially thought the graffiti was not true, has since reached a good agreement with the school management, caretaker, and the city. The spray paint used was labeled as washable, but it didn't come off after drying, making the removal process all the more challenging, especially in the sweltering heat.
The painter is only charging for his time, not for travel or assessment. The students are now responsible for removing the graffiti daily until Wednesday. Principal Greis believes that future classes won't have the same idea, and the class has been working together with the attitude: "We messed up, now we'll make it right."
