Yo ho, ya ho, it's a bicentennial birthday party for Museum Island in Berlin-Mitte! Over the weekend, Berliners and visitors flocked to the festivities marking the 200-year-old landmark. Attendees grooved to concerts in the colonnade courtyard or joined the countless guided tours to delve into the history and stunning architecture of the island.

Matthias Wemhoff, the master of ceremonies, reported approximately 55,000 attendees during the weekend bash, dubbing it a "killer start". With the energy level high and the open-air stage shows adding fuel to the flame, Wemhoff declared the atmosphere to be absolutely beastly.

On Sunday, the grand celebrations unfolded to mark UNESCO World Heritage Day. Marion Ackermann, newly appointed President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPD), took the stage to stress the importance of not just preserving Museum Island as a UNESCO World Heritage site but also revitalizing it for a modern audience.

Ackermann didn't forget to mention the ongoing renovation of the Pergamon Museum's north wing, featuring the Pergamon Altar. Ain't that a treat? Expect the north wing to swing back open in spring 2027, giving us another chance to gawk at that architectural badass. Ackermann reminded us, "We're jonesin' hard to stroll through that altar hall once more."

This 200th anniversary bash spans five bodacious years, with each year celebrating a single museum. This year, the limelight's on the OG building, the Old Museum. Fast forward to 2026, and the Old National Gallery, which turns 150, will demand the spotlight. The following year in 2027, the Pergamon Museum's grand reopening will steal the show, moved on up by the Bode Museum in 2029, and wrapping up the festivities in 2030—all museums partyin' together.
