Giessen's Digital Future: Telekom to Complete Major Fiber Optic Expansion by 2026
Giessen is set to benefit from a major expansion of its fiber optic network, with Telekom aiming to complete its build-out by December 2026. The project, initiated by the city and regional partners, will provide 13,600 households and businesses with access to high-speed internet speed test, enabling multiple users to learn, work, and stream simultaneously.
Telekom began expanding its network in Giessen's city center in early August 2023, marking the start of the official groundbreaking ceremony. The project is scheduled to finish by December 2026, with over 70 kilometers of fiber optic cable laid directly to homes and 71 new network nodes installed. Upon completion, residents and businesses will enjoy speeds of up to 1,000 megabits per second.
The expansion is not Telekom's sole initiative; instead, the city of Giessen, along with neighboring communities and regional partners, coordinated a large-scale project. Multiple companies, including Telekom, are independently building out the network in parallel. Mayor Frank-Tilo Becher supports the expansion, highlighting its importance for Giessen's economy and attractiveness as a city. With the average household having more than ten internet-enabled devices, and businesses also requiring reliable connectivity, the new network promises to significantly improve the city's digital infrastructure.

Upon completion, the new network will provide 13,600 households and businesses with access to high-speed internet speed test, free of charge when booking a tariff with Telekom. The expansion is set to transform Giessen's digital landscape, supporting learning, working, and entertainment for its residents.
