Guide on Making a Suspended Flower Arrangement with Synthetic Blossoms for Your Main Entrance

Whenever the summer season begins, enhancing the appearance of your home's entrance is an ideal way to set a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A simple yet striking method to achieve this is by creating a hanging basket for your front door, brimming with vivid faux flowers.

Our team often begins each new season by decorating our front doors with unique and captivating arrangements. For the summer, instead of opting for traditional wreaths, this hanging arrangement exudes sunlight in a basket and evokes feelings of happiness.

Unlike formal flower arranging, creating a chic summer door hanging is an accessible venture for anyone. While it might seem as easy as tossing flowers into a basket, the secret is arranging them in a way that forms an appealing display.

Get ready to create a delightful summer door hanging with minimal effort!

At Christmastime, we have used swag decorations or wreaths made in-house to maintain a fresh look. While reusing the same wreath base, hanging basket, ribbon, or faux flowers and greenery is common practice, alternative arrangements help prevent monotony.

Although our attic is filled to the brim with stems, we aim to avoid the additional cost of purchasing all-new filler to save money.

Selecting the Perfect Elements for Your Door Basket

While it's essential to include florals and greenery in your basket, incorporate some extra elements for added pizzazz:

  • Picks displaying ladybugs, butterflies, bees, or other Spring and Summer insects
  • Small signs on a short stake
  • A piece of ribbon made into a bow, tucked among the foliage
  • A faux bird
  • A faux bird's nest
  • A small birdhouse
  • Tie a bow around the outside of the basket for an eye-catching addition

Experiment with these elements, and let your creativity flow!

Tips for Arranging a Door Basket

Filling a door basket is such a straightforward task that it hardly warrants a tutorial. Through trial and error, we've learned some useful tips for putting one together:

  1. To provide height for shorter stems, always place something in the bottom of the basket. You can use floral foam, but we usually stuff our baskets with grocery or garbage bags. These bags also help to keep the stems in place.

Pro Tip: If your wicker basket has an open weave, use a black garbage bag instead of grocery bags so the black will vanish and not show through the weaving.

  1. For added drama, opt for a variety of stem lengths. Start by placing the tallest stems at the back of the basket before adding the rest.
  2. Place the florals with the largest blooms where desired before adding greenery and smaller blossoms.
  3. Make sure the more prominent blossoms are displayed toward the front of the basket. You can usually bend wired flowers to face the front instead of leaving them straight.
  4. Evenly distribute draping greenery or florals across the front or favor one side for an asymmetrical look. The asymmetrical look is particularly eye-catching when balanced with an extra tall stem in the background.
  5. Fill any gaps with the smallest sized stems. This is an excellent opportunity to add a fun accent, such as colorful butterflies.

Choosing Realistic Faux Foliage & Floral Stems

Take these tips into account when selecting faux flowers and foliage for your basket:

  • Stems with silk or fabric petals will resemble real flowers most closely.
  • If possible, choose stems with darker green leaves.
  • Opt for stems with colors found in nature.
  • Avoid stems with plastic flowers or leaves.
  • Since no plant in nature is perfect, avoid stems with identical leaves or flower petals.
  • Steer clear of stems with frayed edges on the petals or leaves.

Hanging a Door Basket

There are multiple ways to hang a basket on the door depending on the door type:

  • Utilize a basket with a handle on its back side for ease of hanging.
  • Large suction cups are suitable for hanging the basket on a glass door.
  • Tie a ribbon or jute twine to the basket's handle, long enough to reach the top of the door, and secure it to the top of the door with a thumbtack. The door should still close smoothly.
  • Attach a Command Hook upside-down, on the inside of the door near the top, and create a loop with ribbon or jute twine long enough to reach the top of the door. Tie a knot with the ends of the ribbon to hang it from the hook.
  • Traditional wreath hangers can be employed if the basket does not hang too low on the door.

Purchasing Hanging Baskets

In the past, finding hanging baskets was challenging, but thanks to their growing popularity, they're easier to come by.

Search online for them and select a basket with a flat back as opposed to a round one, which will sit more securely against the door.

We hope these tips inspire you to create your own unique and charming hanging basket for your front door. Impress your neighbors with this easy and affordable DIY project!
