Gütersloh's screening of "Witness" movie sparks enthusiasm among viewers
The Culture Department of the city of Gütersloh is delighted to announce that the clips from the oral history project, "My Childhood and Youth in Gütersloh – Eyewitnesses Tell Their Stories", are now available for public viewing on the culture portal at www.kulturportal-our-website.
These clips, which provide a unique and intimate look into the personal experiences of Gütersloh residents during wartime and post-war times, are a significant resource for understanding the city's cultural history. The project, initiated by the Culture Department and the City Archives, features 23 intense interviews that span the generations of 1922 to 1950.
Two one-hour films have been created from the total of 12.5 hours of interview material, highlighting the themes of childhood during the Nazi era and the differences between rural and urban childhoods. The films offer insights into various aspects of cultural history, including air raids, rationing, neighborhood solidarity, and post-war hope.
The film received a standing ovation at the Bambi Cinema, underscoring its importance and impact. Dr. Franz Jungbluth, who supported the project's implementation, stated that the collected material offers many possibilities for further historical research.
In addition to the films, a brochure with photos of the participants and background information has been created and is available free of charge at the Culture Department in the city hall or at the City Archives. The full interviews are also available at the City Archives for those seeking a more in-depth exploration of the stories shared.
The oral history project clips are a recent addition to the culture portal's content and are now publicly accessible. They are a part of the content available on the platform, making it easier than ever for the public to learn about and engage with Gütersloh's rich cultural history.
We invite you to explore these valuable clips and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and stories that shaped Gütersloh's past. The clips became available on September 17, 2025, so visit the culture portal today and start your journey into the past.
