Haryana IPS Officer's Suicide Note Alleges Caste-Based Harassment
Tragedy struck on Tuesday when Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Y Puran Kumar, an Inspector-General at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak, took his own life in Chandigarh. His wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior bureaucrat, has since filed a complaint alleging systematic persecution by high-ranking officers led to his death.
In his eight-page suicide note, Kumar detailed five years of caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, and public humiliation by senior Haryana officers. Amneet has requested the Chandigarh Police to register an FIR against a senior police officer of Rohtak and a top-ranking official under section 108 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Further investigation into the case is underway.
Kumar was found dead in his Chandigarh residence with a gunshot wound. A Chandigarh police statement revealed that additional rooms in his residence were sealed, and another copy of his will and a final note were recovered. Amneet alleged that a conspiracy was being hatched to falsely implicate her husband in a case involving a liquor contractor and a head constable.
The death of Y Puran Kumar has raised serious concerns about the treatment of officers within the Haryana Police. Amneet's complaint and Kumar's suicide note suggest a pattern of caste-based discrimination and harassment. The ongoing investigation will hopefully shed light on the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
