Highland Hospital Unveils Modernized Southeast Tower

Highland Hospital in Rochester, New York, has completed a significant modernization effort with the unveiling of the Southeast Tower Project. The new addition, spanning 80,000 square feet, boasts several innovative features designed to enhance patient care and comfort.

At the heart of the project is the emphasis on private patient rooms, a standard of care for modern hospitals. Steve Goldstein, President and CEO of Highland Hospital, stated that this shift towards private rooms aims to provide increased privacy and confidentiality, reduced risk of infections, improved patient comfort, better accommodation for family visits, and facilitation of individualized care.

The Southeast Tower Project will house 58 private patient rooms, including eight special bariatric rooms equipped with additional equipment and space for patient safety. The new addition will also feature a designated Physical Therapy space to serve all three patient units.

The design of the new building, overseen by HOLT Architects, P.C., includes sustainable strategies. High efficiency windows and mechanical systems will result in 14% less energy consumption than the average hospital, while water-saving fixtures and plumbing will reduce water usage by 23%. Larger windows in patient rooms will bring in more daylight.

Acoustical walls and other measures have been included in the design to minimize noise, and the ends of corridors feature open glass, large windows, and a sun room, designed to be attractive for patients who need to walk in halls after orthopaedic surgery.

The addition will accommodate general medicine, general surgery, bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal, colorectal, orthopaedic, neurosurgery, vascular, plastics, and urology units on levels five, six, and seven. One floor will be dedicated to other clinical programs.

University of Rochester President Sarah Mangelsdorf acknowledged the vision and leadership of the University of Rochester Medical Center team and Highland Hospital in the project. The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by Mangelsdorf, Mark Taubman, M.D., Cindy Becker, retired Vice President and COO of Highland Hospital, representatives from the Highland Hospital Board, Highland Foundation Board, hospital personnel, local officials, and others.

The Southeast Tower Project represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare at Highland Hospital, embodying a commitment to patient-centered care, sustainability, and innovative design.
