Hyundai India plans expansion into rural areas, aims to boost electric vehicles and introduces 26 new models by 2030.

Hyundai Motor India is making significant strides in its quest to become carbon neutral by 2045, with a renewable energy mix of 88 per cent as of March 2025[6][7]. The company has also incorporated a 10 MW rooftop solar power plant and has made group captive agreements for 75 MW of solar and 43 MW of wind power to fulfill its RE100 target of 2025[7].

In the last fiscal year, Hyundai reported a remarkable 41.8 per cent reduction in Scope I and II emissions, not releasing more than 75,282 tons of CO2 in the last three years[8]. Furthermore, the addition of 100 per cent LNG exclusively has contributed to a reduction of 5,170 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year[7].

As part of its aggressive launch schedule from FY 2025-26 to FY 2029-30, Hyundai plans to introduce 26 new or refreshed models, with 6 being electric vehicles (EVs) and 20 being internal combustion engine (ICE) models[4]. Some of the upcoming cars from Hyundai include the Hyundai Kona Electric 2024, Hyundai Staria, Hyundai Verna, Hyundai Santa Fe 2025, Hyundai i20, and Hyundai Exter[9].

The Hyundai Kona Electric 2024 features a 64.8 kWh battery, a range of 418 km, and a price of approximately ₹ 25 Lakhs[9]. The Hyundai i20 has a 1197 cc petrol engine and a price of approximately ₹ 7.04 Lakhs, while the Hyundai Exter has a 1197 cc engine with multiple fuel options and a price of approximately ₹ 6.21 Lakhs[10]. Specific details about the Hyundai Santa Fe 2025 include a 2199.0 cc diesel engine and a price of approximately ₹ 27 Lakhs[9].

Hyundai is also considering launching Genesis, its global luxury brand, in India, aiming to "redefine luxury through innovation, design, and differentiated experiences"[11]. If introduced, Genesis will enter a competitive space dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and others, but could benefit from Hyundai's established brand equity and after-sales network.

The success of Hyundai in the rural market is evident, with rural presence increasing from 19.4% in FY 2023-24 to 20.9% in FY 2024-25, and reaching its highest-ever of roughly 23% in Q1 FY26[1][3][5]. This growth reflects Hyundai’s successful strategy to appeal more effectively to rural consumers, who have become increasingly aspirational and shifted preferences towards SUVs, which now account for 68.8% of rural sales, a significant jump from 13% in 2015[3].

Regarding CNG vehicle sales in rural areas, Hyundai has seen a 33% year-on-year growth, indicating expanding appeal among price-sensitive consumers in semi-urban and rural pockets[1]. This aligns with broader industry trends of rising CNG adoption due to its cost-effectiveness, lower emissions, and government push for cleaner fuels[2].

To address the price sensitivity and evolving preferences in rural markets, Hyundai’s strategic adjustments include SUV and CNG offerings, localized manufacturing and capacity expansion, and improvement in rural infrastructure and government policies[3][1]. The upcoming Talegaon plant and the engine production at Pune facility aim to reduce costs and support the launch of 26 new models, including multiple internal combustion engine variants, which likely includes CNG vehicles suitable for price-sensitive rural buyers[1][5].

In summary, Hyundai’s rural penetration has evolved with a marked increase in SUV sales and a strong push in CNG vehicle adoption among rural customers. The company is strategically expanding production capacity and focusing on affordable, aspirational SUVs with CNG powertrains to capture price-sensitive rural markets effectively[1][3][5].
