In recent years, the demand for organic food has been on the rise, with sales reaching an impressive $35.1 billion in the United States alone in 2013. This trend is expected to continue, as more people become aware of the benefits that organic food offers.

Organic farming, certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through its USDA Organic certification program, produces more biodiversity than other farming systems. This method of agriculture is not only beneficial for the environment but also for the soil, which becomes healthier and more productive compared to conventional farms. Energy is used more efficiently in organic farms, and they are just as productive.

One of the concerns about organic food is its cost. However, as more people buy organic food, prices may decrease in the future. In the meantime, there are ways to enjoy the benefits of organic food without breaking the bank. Buying seasonal fruits, washing and peeling produce, and purchasing locally can help lower the cost of organic produce.

Local Farmer's markets offer a variety of organically grown produce at cheaper prices compared to organic supermarkets. Buying local at Farmer's markets supports local farmers directly, extending benefits beyond the price tag to include environmental and community benefits.

Organic agriculture also plays a significant role in mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming by sequestering carbon in the soil. Pesticide-free produce contains fewer harmful chemicals such as cadmium, linked to kidney damage and cancer. Organic foods provide more effective antioxidants that aid in preventing cancer, vision problems, cognitive malfunctions, and improving heart health.

Until prices decrease, buying organic food alternatives whenever possible can help families and the environment. Shortcuts to getting the benefits of organic food without the cost include buying seasonal fruits, washing and peeling produce, and purchasing locally.

This story is from the Planet Forward Campus Voices program, an opportunity for students to explore the complex relationship between food and the environment. As the demand for organic food continues to grow, it's essential to understand its benefits, costs, and sustainability.
