"Isarfischer discusses passion and memorable fishing experiences"
Frank Meissner's Passion for the Isar River
In the heart of Munich, the Isar river serves as a cherished fishing spot for passionate angler Frank Meissner. For over two decades, Meissner has dedicated much of his free time to fishing by the river, finding solace and connection to nature in its urban landscape.
Meissner's passion for fishing is evident in his vivid descriptions of the river's surroundings and the fish he encounters. His dedication to the activity is further demonstrated by his involvement with the Isar Fishermen, where he serves on the board, undertakes press work, acts as a fisheries inspector, and volunteers as a trainer for the fisheries exam.
The Isar river is renowned for its diverse fish species, including brown trout, grayling, and barbel, making it a popular destination for recreational fishing enthusiasts in Munich. However, the river faces challenges such as warmer temperatures and the increasing crowds, which can impact the well-being of its fish population.
Trout, in particular, prefer cool, clear water and can become stressed in warmer temperatures. Meissner and the Isar Fishermen are dedicated to documenting and monitoring the catch of huchen, a type of trout native to the Isar, to ensure the health and sustainability of the river's ecosystem.
Despite these challenges, the Isar remains a significant and meaningful place for Meissner. He hopes for more awareness of nature and for people to take care of and protect the fish in the river. Meissner opposes practices such as conscious trampling of fish and the release of fish back into the water, which are prohibited.
Sadly, 80 percent of all river fish in the Isar are currently on the red list, indicating they are not doing well. Meissner's biggest catch to date was a nearly 12-kilogram heavy huchen, measuring 1.07 meters in length. Despite this impressive feat, Meissner's primary focus remains on preserving the river's fish population and promoting responsible angling practices.
With the return of the Isar Fisherman's series "By the Water" for a second round, Meissner will continue to share his love for fishing and the Isar river with others, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders that lie within our urban environments.
Frank Meissner's love for the Isar River extends beyond fishing, as he also cherishes the river's surrounding landscapes, making it an essential part of his home-and-garden lifestyle and outdoor-living. His dedication to the river is evident in his involvement with the Isar Fishermen, as he aims to promote sports like fishing while ensuring the health and sustainability of the river's fish population.
