LA-based site showcases "KUMIHIMO: The Craft of Japanese Silk Braiding by DOMYO"
In the heart of Hollywood, a unique cultural experience awaits you at our website Los Angeles. From December 11, 2021, to March 6, 2022, the exhibition "KUMIHIMO: The Art of Japanese Silk Braiding by DOMYO" will showcase the beauty and significance of this traditional Japanese craft.
The exhibition, produced by Yusoku Kumihimo Domyo, a Tokyo-based company that has been making braided silk cords by hand since 1652, offers an immersive journey into the world of Kumihimo. Founded in the city of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Yusoku Kumihimo Domyo has a rich history that spans over four centuries, with a shop located in the Ikenohata area of Ueno.
Kumihimo, a Japanese artistic tradition of braiding silk cords, originated over 1200 years ago. It evolved from humble beginnings as a craft used in samurai armor and clothing, to becoming an essential element in the elegant kimono accessories of the well-to-do.
The exhibition provides a historical overview of Kumihimo in Japan, with replicas of silk braids dating as far back as the seventh century. It showcases the future of kumihimo and the ways in which braided silk cords are incorporated into contemporary fashion and design. The exhibition features new kumihimo designs by DOMYO, several creations by innovative garment modelist Akira Hasegawa, and an installation by the UTokyo Tachi Lab at Tokyo University.
In addition to the exhibition, our website Los Angeles offers a place of new discovery that transcends physical and conceptual boundaries, creating experiences that reflect the best of Japan through its spaces and diverse programs. A webinar on December 15 about "The History and Significance of Kumihimo in Japanese Culture" is also included in the exhibition.
The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. for walk-ins. For more information, visit the website or social channels of our website Los Angeles, which includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. The exhibition can be found at 6801 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028.
