Newcomer hiker develops skills and knowledge on mountaineering adventures

Marli, a beginner tramper, has been meticulously preparing for her first overnight tramp – the 24km Mt Holdsworth Jumbo Circuit in the Tararau Ranges, north of Wellington.

Five months ago, Marli started planning for the challenging trek with her friends, using a messenger group to discuss and coordinate their preparations. She quickly learned the importance of planning as a group and the necessity of having a contingency plan.

Marli researched extensively to decide what gear she needed for the tramp and what she still needed to buy. She purchased a new sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner, waterproof pants, and improved her boots' heel padding, as well as buying new hiking socks. Marli and her friends created a packing and meal planning list and assigned tasks and specific items to bring for the group.

To ensure she was physically ready for the two-night tramp, Marli has been improving her fitness level. She found that her boots were hurting her feet during longer walks, so she bought new hiking socks to alleviate the discomfort.

In order to be prepared for all conditions during the tramp, Marli checked the MetService website for weather updates and made a contingency plan to return early if the weather wasn't suitable. The group planned to start the tramp on Saturday morning, but would not if weather warnings were issued.

Marli wrote down her plans for her partner in case of an emergency, including the planned route, departure and return times, and the huts to be stayed at. She also learned that it's okay to turn back if conditions change during a tramp.

Despite the severe gale force winds and heavy rain they faced during the tramp, Marli and her friends made the decision to turn around, cutting the tramp short due to the severe weather conditions. Marli was glad she had prepared for all conditions and enjoyed her trip despite the weather.

Marli's preparations for the Mt Holdsworth Jumbo Circuit trail demonstrate the importance of planning, research, and contingency planning for any outdoor adventure.
