The Gropelingen depot, a 100-year-old facility in Bremen city, has been completely redesigned, marking a significant milestone in the city's commitment to modernizing its public transport infrastructure. The newly renovated depot, inaugurated on August 19, 2022, boasts several key improvements and modernizations aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and employee welfare.

  1. Modern Infrastructure

The depot has been updated with state-of-the-art facilities to support the maintenance and storage of Bremen’s public transportation vehicles, particularly buses and trams.

  1. Sustainability Measures

Renovations incorporated eco-friendly technologies such as energy-efficient lighting, solar panels, and advanced waste management systems to reduce the depot's environmental footprint.

  1. Expanded Capacity

The depot layout was optimized to increase vehicle storage capacity and streamline vehicle dispatch and maintenance processes, improving daily operational flow.

  1. Improved Maintenance Facilities

New workshops with modern diagnostic and repair equipment enable faster turnaround times for vehicle servicing, enhancing fleet reliability.

  1. Enhanced Employee Amenities

Upgraded staff areas, including rest zones and offices, contribute to better working conditions and employee satisfaction.

  1. Integration with Public Transport Network

The depot’s location and design improvements support seamless integration with Bremen’s wider public transportation infrastructure, facilitating efficient service schedules.

In addition to these improvements, the Gropelingen depot also features a new turntable with a 11,000 square meter transfer facility and a loop, a 13,000 square meter depot, and a four-story police station. The workshop hall offers space for seven workstations with roof work platforms, pits, and side pits, vehicle lifting equipment, crane and sanding facilities.

The urban environment improvements include the creation of 800 meters of bike and pedestrian paths, two car-sharing parking spaces, and 300 bike parking spaces in neighboring streets. The new building at the Gropelingen depot also includes a washing hall with a washing portal and water treatment facility, an underfloor wheel lathe for processing vehicle wheelsets, components workshops, an electrical workshop, a mechanical workshop, and social areas with changing rooms.

The depot now also has a storage facility with nine storage tracks and a bypass track. The new Gropelingen turntable was put into operation in June 2022. The inauguration of the Gropelingen depot was attended by Senator for Construction, Mobility and Urban Development, Özlem Ünsal, along with other BSAG board members, employees, and neighborhood guests.

BSAG, the operator of Bremen's public transportation system, is looking forward to the police moving into their new headquarters in Gropelingen this winter. The integration of the police station at the Gropelingen location was a great opportunity, successfully implemented through close cooperation between all parties involved.

The police station's proximity to the transfer hub makes it easily accessible to citizens and positively impacts the neighborhood. Senator Ünsal emphasized that the Gropelingen depot is one of the most frequently used stops in the city, and the redesign is a great milestone in mobility. Thorsten Harder, Technical Director of Bremer Straßenbahn AG, stated that the mobility transition requires modern workshops and good working places for employees, and the newly built depot in Gropelingen combines both.

The photo of the inauguration was taken by BSAG. Rudolf Blome, BSAG project leader for the Gropelingen operations yard, and Malte Garlich, BSAG Workshop Manager Operations Yard Gropelingen, were also present at the event. Approximately 100 million euros were invested in the redesign of the Gropelingen depot facilities. The redesign of the Gropelingen depot is a testament to Bremen’s commitment to modernizing its public transport infrastructure with an emphasis on sustainability, operational efficiency, and employee welfare.
