Parking restrictions on the Mount of Olives have been lifted
Niederkassel, Germany - Starting from this Thursday, the city will welcome a unique transformation as mobile furniture, on loan from Zukunftsnetz Mobility NRW, takes over public spaces. This initiative, known as 'Space Makers', aims to demonstrate various uses of public space and foster community engagement.
According to Stella Schwietering, Project Manager of the Space Makers project, the response has been both critical and positive. She also shared that the action period reached more people than any other participation format for the parking space concept.
Throughout the action period, residents have utilised the mobile terraces for communal dinners, card games, short breaks, and more. The project has also seen the inclusion of various activities such as energy transition experiments, discussions on children's rights, car-sharing with discounts, and music nights.
On the final action day, which will take place on July 30th at 6 PM at Otto-Böhne Square, a musical "bank robbery" will be performed by Rudi Rhode, Toster Maria Freitag, and friends. The performance will feature guitar, accordion, saxophone, and singing.
Following the final action day, the city will evaluate feedback from emails, office hours, an on-site mailbox, and an online survey after dismantling the furniture. The evaluation will be incorporated into the further development of the parking space concept.
Gunnar Ohrndorf, Deputy Mayor, stated that the action period was for developing a more efficient and fair public space plan. He emphasised the importance of community involvement in shaping the city's public spaces.
After the Niederkassel action, the mobile furniture will continue its journey to Wuppertal. For those interested in learning more about the Space Makers project, local municipal websites, community organizations, or urban development news sources are recommended.
In the transformation of Niederkassel's public spaces, mobile furniture has not only been used for communal activities such as dinners and card games, but also for home-and-garden experiments, showcasing how public spaces can adapt to various lifestyles. After the successful action period in Niederkassel, the mobile furniture will move on to enrich home-and-garden lifestyles in Wuppertal.
