In a recent announcement, Antje Kapek, a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and spokesperson for traffic policy since 2022, unveiled plans for 280 traffic calming measures across the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, including the implementation of measures around Boxhagen Square.

The proposed changes aim to create a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment. These measures include the introduction of pedestrian zones, asphalt cushions, one-way street regulations, zebra crossings, sidewalk extensions, and 'modal filters' (bollards on the road). The speed limit and speed humps in the cobblestone pavement of Boxhagen Square are already in place to encourage slow driving.

The 'Superblock Boxi' alliance, an active campaigner for traffic calming around Boxhagen Square, will undoubtedly welcome these developments. It's worth noting that the concept of 'Xhain calm down' only covers side streets in the district, making Boxhagen Square a significant focus of these traffic calming efforts.

The weekly market at Boxhagen Square will continue to exist, ensuring the local community's traditions are preserved. Additionally, traders at Boxhagener Platz are exempt from the car ban in Boxhagen Square.

While Boxhagen Square will see significant changes, the main streets of the district remain under the responsibility of the Senate Department for Transport. Other traffic-related projects in Friedrichshain can be found on various websites, including those of the District Office Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, berlin.de, B.Z. Berlin, BILD, Architecture Urbanism Berlin, Wikipedia, and Top10 Berlin.

For more information and pictures of the Boxhagen Square project, visitors can visit the District Office Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg's website. As the implementation of these measures progresses, the district promises to become a more welcoming and pedestrian-friendly space for all.
