In the heart of Saarbrucken, a 26-year-old fashion designer named Paula Votteler is making waves in the world of sustainable fashion. With a 65K-strong Instagram following, her unique creations are gaining popularity as she challenges fast fashion and advocates for the planet.

Votteler's journey into fashion design began in childhood, where she learnt to crochet from her mother at the tender age of five. After attending sewing courses at the Volkshochschule, her passion for creating clothes remained dormant until the pandemic. It was then that she found her true calling.

Influenced by her interest in sustainability and recycling, Votteler decided to study packaging technology after school. However, her lack of confidence in her drawing abilities steered her towards a different path. In October 2023, she started her degree in fashion design at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee.

Despite not having a formal background in fashion design, Votteler's innovative approach to fashion is evident in her work. She uses a variety of unconventional materials like warped plastic bottles, vegetable netting, glass, old jeans, seashells, beads, and embroidery hoops to make her handbags, waistcoats, and tops.

Her work is characterised by intricate details, making her creations like little works of art. Each piece tells a story, reflecting Votteler's belief in the value of existing materials. Her designs are a testament to her commitment to sustainability, as she creatively repurposes materials that might otherwise end up in landfill.

Votteler's Instagram handle, @paulasprojects_, showcases her latest projects. Currently, she is working on a blouse made from vegetable nets and a top made from polished glass. Her next project is to start working on an online shop.

In the future, Votteler dreams of having a larger studio with a handful of employees, one of whom would be her mother. Her work aims to make a statement against fast fashion and the treatment of the planet as waste. Despite the challenges, Votteler's designs always give her a bit of hope and serve as a cheerful and colorful balance in these often hopeless and oppressive times.

With her innovative approach to sustainable fashion and her commitment to reusing materials, Paula Votteler is a shining example of how fashion can be both beautiful and eco-friendly. Her work is available for request on her Instagram account, and we can't wait to see what she creates next.

Paula Votteler's fashion designs extend beyond clothing, as she also incorporates her creative touch into lifestyle items such as home-and-garden decor, blending fashion-and-beauty with sustainable living. In line with her eco-friendly philosophy, Votteler plans to expand her online shop to offer homeware pieces made from repurposed materials.
