Premiering on 22nd of June:
Kutahya's Rooted Nomad, Nurten Kocaman, Unveils Warm-Hearted Textile Artistry in Osterath
"I ain't got deep roots, but I sure got something," declares Nurten Kocaman, a multi-cultural artist hailing from Kutahya, born in '67. Splitting her time between Turkey and Germany from a young age, Nurten found solace in her craft, bridging the cultural gap with time-honored techniques from her birthplace. "Eventually, I started breathing life into old craft traditions, making them relevant in the current era," she says.
Kutahya, famed for its elaborate ceramic artistry, left an indelible mark on Nurten, with its detailed patterns, arabesques, and intricate designs. Her parents' craft professions further fueled her creativity, particularly her mother's vibrant, colorful textiles that formed the foundations of her color theory learning.
Nowadays, sustainability takes center stage in Nurten's work. Recycling and upcycling textiles primarily is her concept. She crafts quilt-like compositions from diverse fabric fragments and creates intricate designs using fabric strips and thread under glass.
"My soul's as warm as a fired kiln," coos the title of her exhibition, pulling from a poem penned by Nurten herself. The poems appear in their original Turkish form, followed by a German translation. While the poems don't explicitly state a theme, one could argue that they mimic the Christian community's beliefs about treating living beings with kindness and care.
Nurten's expansive workshop in Krefeld is where she spins the magic. Regular workshops, sometimes in collaboration with museums, make her art accessible to all who seek it.
The grand unveiling of her latest work graces the Evangelical Church on Alte Poststraße 15 in Osterath on June 22, at 11 am. Expect the exhibition to continue until September 21. Opening hours are between 9 am and 12 pm on Wednesdays to Fridays, with additional viewings available by appointment (0175 52 180 83). Katrin Meinhard, the women's representative and synodal representative for Christian-Islamic dialogue, will deliver an introduction at the vernissage.
