Lastadie: A Transformed Historic Harbour District in Lübeck
Located on the western bank of the Trave River, Lastadie is a historic warehouse and harbour district in Lübeck, Germany, with roots deeply entwined in the city's Hanseatic trade and shipping activities. The name Lastadie, first documented in 1548 and officially established in 1852, originally referred to shipbuilding and equipment sites on the Trave River.
Over the centuries, Lastadie evolved as a vital storage and loading area for goods passing through the port, playing a significant role in Lübeck's growth as a major trading city in the Baltic Sea region. However, the district's transformation has not been static.
The redevelopment of Wallhalbinsel, at an unspecified time, marked a turning point for Lastadie. Railway facilities were removed from the old main station site, and the new Lastadie served to access industrial businesses and the goods station on the site of the old main station. During this redevelopment, Lastadie was discontinued, with the largest part disappearing.
Yet, the spirit of Lastadie endured. A new street named Lastadie was laid out in 1934, starting at Holstentorplatz and running parallel to Straße Auf der Wallhalbinsel. The northern section of Lastadie was renamed Behnkai in 1899 in honor of Senator Heinrich Theodor Behn.
The complete redevelopment of the Wallhalbinsel began at the start of the 1990s, resulting in the removal of remaining railway tracks and businesses. The Musik- und Kongresshalle was built on the Wallhalbinsel as part of the redevelopment, and a hotel was made.
Today, Lastadie stands as a testament to Lübeck's rich maritime history, blending historic warehouses with modern uses such as offices, cultural venues, and residential developments.
