In a fresh and captivating twist to the classic Donkey Kong franchise, Donkey Kong Bananza has arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2. This 3D platformer, now available for purchase at Best Buy for $69, has been awarded the Editor's Choice label.

Donkey Kong, alongside his partner Pauline, embarks on an adventure through a subterranean world filled with diverse environments, including lush lagoons, canyons, and frozen tundra. The gameplay, described as incredibly fun and engaging, emphasises Donkey Kong's powerful abilities to smash and dig through terrain, uncovering secrets and helping underground inhabitants deal with the disruptive Void Company.

Key features of Donkey Kong Bananza include destructible environments, layered underground worlds, smooth and fluid movement, a skill tree and transformations, and a two-player mode. Players can punch, carve tunnels, and tear off chunks of terrain to use for swinging or throwing, with each layer offering unique biomes and materials. The skill tree allows players to unlock enhancements and transformations, such as the Ostrich Bananza, which enables DK to flutter across gaps and drop eggs on enemies.

Pauline, controlled by the second player, can shoot "word projectiles" with varying effects, designed to be accessible for younger or less experienced players. The Switch 2 joycon’s mouse pointer feature is used for precise aiming, making the game a great choice for family play.

Donkey Kong Bananza boasts impressive technical and visual aspects, running primarily at a smooth 60fps with 3D audio. However, some frame rate dips and texture pop-in occur in more intense, destructible segments. The destruction is mostly permanent within a play session unless players reset the terrain or leave the area.

Critics have praised Donkey Kong Bananza for its impressive use of the Switch 2 hardware, setting a new benchmark for the console's capabilities. The gameplay is praised for its momentum-based, fluid movement system and satisfying environmental physics, recalling the quality of Super Mario Odyssey. The two-player mode is seen as a smart design choice for family play but may lack depth for more dedicated players.

Overall, Donkey Kong Bananza is regarded as a technically impressive and enjoyable 3D platformer that successfully expands on Nintendo’s recent platforming formula with a fresh underground setting, extensive destructibility, and accessible multiplayer features. It is recommended to be added to the Switch 2 library. The game is available at Best Buy for $69, and a Donkey Kong & Pauline amiibo is also available for $29.
