Saxony-Anhalt, a region in eastern Germany, is working diligently to develop its tourist infrastructure and capitalize on international opportunities, despite a challenging period for the tourism and hospitality industry.

According to the Savings Bank Association, the turnover in the industry has seen a decrease. This downturn is particularly noticeable in the accommodation sector, where satisfaction with the business situation remains subdued.

The state's Minister of Economics, Sven Schulze (CDU), has emphasized the importance of making positive developments visible and building on them. He acknowledges the challenges facing the industry, including the fact that it has not yet reached pre-crisis levels, the absence of international guests, and low occupancy rates in many businesses.

However, there are some positive signs. Leisure and cultural facilities in Saxony-Anhalt recorded a 2.5% increase in visitors, according to the tourism barometer of the East German Savings Bank Association.

The Harz and the Harz foothills remain the largest tourism region in the state, with Germans making up the majority of visitors. Preliminary results from the statistical office of Saxony-Anhalt show a decline in overnight stays in July 2025, with a decrease of 3.6% in guests and 4.2% in overnight stays compared to July 2024. This decline corresponds to the nationwide developments.

Despite the decrease in overnight stays, simple day trips remain an important source of revenue for the tourism industry in Saxony-Anhalt. Approximately 70 million day trips were recorded last year, with tourists preferring outdoor activities and avoiding high-priced options.

The state is aware of the need to address the lack of young talent in skilled professions, a concern for the tourism industry. Saxony-Anhalt aims to continue its efforts to develop the tourist infrastructure and utilize opportunities on the international market, with a focus on making positive developments visible and building on them.
