In a bid to revitalize town centres and enhance local amenities, Charnwood Borough Council has undertaken a series of public realm works, with notable success in Shepshed's Market Place and Leicester.

The regeneration of Shepshed's Market Place, a project led by award-winning independent consultancy Pick Everard, has turned the area into a versatile and pedestrian-friendly space. The scheme, which cost £2.5m, places accessibility and flexibility at the fore, ensuring the space can be used for a variety of purposes, including town centre events.

The improvements in Shepshed include new car parking spaces, seating, bicycle parking facilities, and an array of trees and plantings. Pavements in Market Place and along nearby Brook Street have been upgraded and expanded to increase accessibility.

Cllr Jewel Miah, leader of Charnwood Borough Council, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project. "The area is now more attractive for people," Cllr Miah said, expressing hope that the improvements will have a positive impact on the town of Shepshed. The council has worked closely with the town council, the town team, local businesses, and residents throughout the project, ensuring collaboration and engagement in a live working environment.

In Leicester, Pick Everard has completed various improvement projects aimed at enhancing city function and aesthetics. The details of these projects are yet to be specified, but they are believed to focus on urban regeneration, public realm improvements, transport infrastructure, or commercial development.

Cllr Miah also expressed optimism about the impact of these projects on the town, stating that the area is now more accessible and safer. Residents are expected to benefit from these improvements, with the new spaces offering a more welcoming and enjoyable environment.

These regeneration projects are part of a wider set of public realm works by Charnwood Borough Council, enabling the town centre to host new events and market stalls, further boosting local businesses and community engagement.
