Renowned Photographer Prepares for Unique Underwater Shoot at Birch Aquarium, Scripps
Wayne Martin Belger, a Tucson-based artist known for his innovative use of pinhole cameras, will be conducting a fascinating wet 'n' wild photo shoot at Birch Aquarium in San Diego. This public exploration centre, affiliated with UC San Diego's world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography, is home to over 60 habitats showcasing fish and invertebrates from the Pacific Northwest to the Caribbean.
Belger, famous for his unusual organic materials like human skulls, bones, organs, and blood in his camera construction, will be using an underwater pinhole camera named Yemaya for this special event. Built in 2003, Yemaya is crafted from aluminum, brass, titanium, and other materials, with a quarter-inch acrylic pane covering the pinhole to block out water.
The photo shoot will take place on July 12 and 13 in the aquarium's 70,000-gallon kelp forest tank, which represents local marine life off the coast of La Jolla. The tank is home to three species of sharks, moray eels, barracuda, giant sea bass, and other aquatic creatures. The dives are open to the public and included with aquarium admission.
Following the dive, Belger will be available for media interviews. The images taken inside Birch Aquarium's kelp forest habitat and Belger's pinhole camera will be on display at Device Gallery in La Jolla from July 19 to Sept. 2. These captivating images will also be part of Belger's forthcoming book Deep Worlds.
