Revamped Byron Bay Hotel Introduces 10-Suite Guesthouse, an Idyllic Retreat for Relaxed Design Enthusiasts
In the heart of Byron Bay, Australia, Raes, an exceedingly chic boutique hotel, underwent a remarkable transformation in 2016, thanks to the creative vision of Tamsin Johnson. Raes, a stalwart of the beachy pocket for three decades, was redesigned to incorporate maximalist interior elements in Tamsin's idiosyncratic style. The hotel's design features a blue and green pastel color palette, which beautifully balances luxury with its chilled-out, surfy, Australian mood. Tamsin sourced as much local and Australian-made materials as possible for the interior design. Custom-made bed frames and canopies were created for each suite by a local craftsperson, while molded plasterwork was added to create a sense of dimension and character depth. The communal areas showcase Spanish and Neo-Jacobean design influences, with a touch of levity and fun that Tamsin masterfully weaves together. Candy cane-striped lamps, similar to those used in these spaces, can be found for $160. Greek patterned pillowcases, emulating the Mediterranean influence found in the bedroom suites, are available for $9.99. As Raes expanded to a second ten-suite guesthouse property, Tamsin was enlisted once again to give the new property the distinctively Raes-flavored treatment. An accent mirror in the coastal blue and green palette can bring an ocean hue into one's own bathroom. The newly built guesthouse of Raes, located in Wategos near Byron Bay, was designed by the Australian architecture firm Bourne Blue after 2016. With each room having its own distinct character, the hotel continues to provide a unique and memorable experience for its guests. By weaving together classic Spanish-inspired design with elements of levity and fun, Tamsin has created a perfect canvas for guests' memories. A new chapter has been opened in Raes' legacy with the introduction of the second ten-suite guesthouse property, ensuring that the hotel's charm and character continue to captivate visitors for years to come. Tamsin aims to create a design that stimulates memories without being overtly comedic. Her design at Raes has brought a novel, distinctively European stamp to Australian hotels, making it a must-visit destination for travellers seeking a unique and unforgettable experience.
