Rotation of journalists in Gaza to be Permitted

In a stark reminder of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, 31 prominent Israeli figures published an open letter in The Guardian, asserting that "Our country is starving the people of Gaza to death."

Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has urged the German government to take stronger actions to protect Palestinian journalists in Gaza. RSF accuses the Israeli army of war crimes against journalists in Gaza and has joined calls to suspend the EU-Israel trade agreement due to Israel’s violations of human rights in Gaza.

The organisation's broader calls for suspending trade deals with Israel and criticising the blockade and military actions infer an appeal to Germany, as an EU member, to use its influence diplomatically and economically to protect journalists in Gaza. Germany's government has shown some involvement in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, but the call from RSF relates more to political and diplomatic pressure to stop attacks on journalists and civilians.

Unfortunately, little criticism of the Gaza war has been heard from two major German journalists' unions. The German Journalists' Association (DJV) caused outrage on social media with a warning about manipulation attempts using photos of severely emaciated children from Gaza, despite the depicted children suffering from hunger.

In the RSF's World Press Freedom Index, Israel ranks 112th and the Palestinian territories rank 163rd out of 180 countries. Germany, however, has declined one step in the index, ranking 11th. Part of the decline is due to the tense climate in newsrooms regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

  2. As the RSF's World Press Freedom Index ranks Israel 112th and the Palestinian territories 163rd, while Germany has declined one step to rank 11th, a shift in discourse towards topics like 'sustainable-living', 'home-and-garden', and Palestinian rights might help to raise awareness on these important issues.
