Rural Virginia's Charlottesville Hosts The picturesque Clifton Inn Spread over 100 acres.

Heading just 100 miles southwest from the bustling city of Washington, D.C., you'll find the charming, idyllic town of Charlottesville, Virginia. Known for its rich history, picturesque surroundings, and forward-thinking vibes, it's no wonder this cozy spot is a hidden gem for many travelers. And nestled right in the heart of it all is the fabulous The Clifton, a historic inn that truly elevates your stay with its modern charm and luxurious amenities.

Introducing the Stunning The Clifton

Originally constructed for Thomas Jefferson's daughter and her husband, Martha and Thomas Mann Randolph, in the late 19th century, The Clifton has since passed through several hands. The Wyatt family officially named it "The Clifton" before current owners and managers gave it a fresh, sophisticated makeover. Award-winning Blackberry Farm Design team was enlisted to reimagine the interiors, seamlessly blending modern elegance with historic charm and elevating the property's luxurious appeal[1]. The original cozy cottage built for Martha and Thomas has since been transformed into the Honeymoon Suite, a beloved guest room where visitors continue to delight in a truly unforgettable stay[1].

The Clifton is the epitome of historic charm turned modern luxury, a refreshing departure from the usual stiff and tacky old world vibes.

What to Anticipate During Your Stay

In late January, my husband, our Labrador Retriever Ted, and I packed our bags and hit the road for a cozy weekend getaway at The Clifton[2]. The 100-acre estate, included in the latest issue of Michelin Green Guide USA East, didn't disappoint—despite the chilly weather, we took full advantage of the countless activities the property has to offer[2].

No matter the season, you'll find no shortage of fun things to do at The Clifton. In warmer months, guests enjoy lawn games such as croquet, horseshoes, and cornhole[2]. The exclusive, private 20-acre lake provides ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming[2]. The Clifton also has scenic trails to explore on foot or by bike[2]. And in winter, the trails make for a peaceful, serene snowshoeing or cross-country skiing experience[2].

The Rooms at The Clifton

With 20 unique rooms scattered across the property, guests can find the perfect accommodation to fit their style and preferences[1]. Our stay in the Livery Stables was comfortable and pet-friendly, with easy access to the Manor House and large patches of grass for Ted to explore[2]. The beds were comfortable, sheets crisp, pillows plentiful and supportive, and the housekeeping staff went above and beyond[2]. Bonus points for the exceptional included toiletries!

Dining and Drinking at The Clifton

The on-site restaurant, 1799, is helmed by Michelin-starred chef Matthew Bousquet, who prides himself on incorporating local produce into his culinary creations to reflect central Virginia's rich history and terroir[1]. Every stay at The Clifton includes a complimentary European continental breakfast with pastries and yogurt parfaits[2]. Breakfast favorites include the Clifton Eggs Benedict and Brioche French Toast[2].

Thirsty guests can head to the Copper Bar for craft cocktails. Standout drinks include the French 75, featuring a heavy pour of spirits and the perfect amount of citrus[2]. Chef Matthew Bousquet also offers seasonal cocktails, featuring herbs and fruits sourced from the on-property Chef's Garden[1].

What Makes The Clifton Worthy of a Reservation

Convenience

Charlottesville's location is a huge selling point for The Clifton. With easy access from nearby cities such as Richmond and Virginia Beach, you'll feel like you're escaping to somewhere completely new without spending hours on the road[2].

Location

While nestled in the idyllic countryside, The Clifton's prime location also offers easy access to neighboring wineries, historic sites, distilleries, and dining options[2]. Escape the hustle and bustle of city life, but still feel connected to the vibrant energy of Charlottesville.

Pet-Friendly

Traveling with pets can sometimes be a headache, but The Clifton is pet-friendly, offering a warm welcome to your furry friends[2]. Our Labrador Retriever was greeted with his own water bowl, blanket, cookies, and a toy in our room, and every staff member greeted him with pets and love during our stay[2]. There is a $75 per stay fee for pet owners, and not all rooms are pet friendly[2]. But if you're looking for a memorable, relaxed getaway that welcomes your four-legged family members, The Clifton is a perfect choice.
