The Sagrada Familia: A Century in the Making, Nearing Completion

The iconic La Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona is set to reach a significant milestone in its construction, with the central tower expected to be completed by the end of 2026 or the beginning of the following year.

First stones were laid in 1882, and over a century later, the first pieces of the central tower have now been put in place. This tower, upon completion, will rise to an impressive 172 meters (564 feet), making it the tallest Christianity church in Europe.

The central tower will be crowned by a cross and surrounded by five other towers, each dedicated to a different biblical figure. One of these towers will be dedicated to Mary, and the remaining four will be for the four evangelists.

The Sagrada Familia Foundation will be responsible for financing the continuation of the construction after the completion of the tower works. Work on the facades and interior of the basilica will continue for several years after the tower's completion.

Antoni Gaudí, a fervent Catholic, began designing the Sagrada Familia in 1883. His unique aesthetic, which incorporates both Christianity symbolism and organic forms, has made the basilica a major international tourist attraction. Last year, 4.9 million people paid to visit the Sagrada Familia, with 15% of those tourists coming from the United States.

Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the Sagrada Familia and designated it a minor basilica in 2010. Next year marks the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, and events will be held to celebrate his legacy. In June 2026, Pope Leo XIV has been invited for a solemn Mass to be held in Gaudí's memory.

Currently, the Ulmer Münster church in southern Germany is the tallest Christianity church in Europe, standing at 162 meters (531.5 feet). However, with the completion of the Sagrada Familia's central tower, Barcelona's landmark is poised to reclaim this title.

Work on the basilica has sped up over recent decades due to its popularity among tourists. Despite the progress, only one of its multiple towers was finished when Gaudí died in 1926. The Sagrada Familia continues to be a testament to Gaudí's vision and the enduring appeal of his unique architectural style.
